It can be daunting shopping for a Christmas present for a man who’s used to the finer things in life and has … well … everything. But London is filled with unique shops and exclusive boutiques that all offer something special.
If you’re planning on Christmas shopping in the capital and are a little short on inspiration, keep reading for our top picks as well as an inside tip from a blogger in the know …
A new breed of man is emerging: a man who can appreciate a good cotton count or the subtle notes of a really good wine. This man is more discerning, and perhaps harder to please.
Fashion blogger Stu Bradley, of Not So Lonely Londoners, is a case in point. When we asked him for tips on how to Christmas shop for the man in your life – whether that’s your father, brother, uncle, friend or partner – he told us …
“There’s this outdated notion still floating around that men hate shopping and thinking about fashion, and that’s why they always end up getting socks for Christmas. For most men, that’s simply not the case anymore.
“I’m willing to bet that, at any given time, most men are hankering for one particular ‘classic’ or investment item for their wardrobe. If you can figure out what that item is, and get them the perfect version of it, we’ll pretty much love you forever.”
But if figuring out what the man in your life most wants for Christmas has left you stumped, don’t worry. Here are some of the most exclusive locations in London to find that ‘perfect version’ of his dream gift:
• Davidoff of London – if he’s partial to cigars
If he’s partial to having a cigar after dinner, treat him to something exceptional from Davidoff of London. With their very own top-end brand sitting alongside the best Cuban cigars, you can’t go wrong. Don’t worry if you’re not a cigar expert yourself: the staff really know their cigars and will be able to guide you in the right direction.
Davidoff cigars are famed for their depth of flavour and smooth, clean finish – making them the go-to place for cigar connoisseurs.
Did you know?: Davidoff cigars are favoured by a certain Mr James Bond: they’ve featured in Bond both GoldenEye and The World is Not Enough. So, a Davidoff cigar might go down particularly well if you’re Christmas shopping for a Bond fan.
• La Fromagerie – if he likes fine food and wine
If he’s a foodie, head to a speciality cheese shop like La Fromagerie (as featured on Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle blog, goop) where they take cheese very, very seriously.
The brand’s Highbury Park and Moxon Street outlets feature a maturing cellar and a cheese room where experts are on hand to help you pick the right artisan cheese.
As well as their extensive selection of wines, La Fromagerie has an array of beautifully designed cookbooks which would be perfect for any respectable coffee table.
Tip: Pick up some of La Fromagerie’s chutneys and biscuits – handmade on-site – and a selection of cheeses to put together a thoughtfully curated cheeseboard with a wine to match.
• Selfridges – if you’re looking to spoil him
Selfridges is a one-stop-shop for exclusive designer clothes and luxury products and is synonymous with high-end shopping in London.
Socks may be a cliché, but he won’t mind if they’re cashmere socks by Ralph Lauren. He may not need anything from Selfridges, but you’re bound to find something he’ll definitely want.
Tip: If you book our Guoman shopping package you’ll also be given a £50 voucher to spend at Selfridges – which you can always choose to spend on him, or on you. .
• Asprey – for the man who truly does have everything
When Jackie Onassis (formerly Kennedy) asked her hotel concierge for advice on what to buy for the man who has everything (the man in question was her second husband Aristotle), she was directed to Asprey on Bond Street. She left with a pair of personalised cufflinks, which are said to have gone down a treat with her husband.
Asprey is a heritage brand which has been creating fine jewellery, expertly crafted from high-grade materials, since 1781.
They have a stunning collection of watches, cufflinks, timepieces and leather products, which Asprey will happily engrave or emboss with a personal message à la Mrs Onassis.
But if you really want to push the boat out, you could commission a bespoke piece like the chess set Ringo Starr was given for his birthday.
Did you know?: Asprey created the Coeur de la Mer necklace worn by Kate Winslet’s character in Titanic. And that’s not all – Asprey has been favoured by the Royal family since the 1800’s when it was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal by Queen Victoria at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
Now that we’ve shared our tips with you, it’s your turn. Where would you ‘shop for him’ in London? …
